It’s about taking one day where we are conscious about our impact on the earth.

information from the organizers below:

Join the No Impact Project for an International Day of Giving Back! This month, as part of the No Impact Project’s monthly series of Give Back Days, we are partnering with the The Green Streets Initiative to organize the first Walk/Ride day in NYC! This city-wide action will encourage New Yorkers to use alternative modes of transportation such as bikes, walking, public transit, unicycles, carpooling, skateboarding, etc. We are also partnering with local businesses who will provide deals for those who participate and wear green. In the evening, to celebrate, thank participants, and take action on sustainable transportation campaigns we are hosting a Meet-up at Luca Bar, where No Impact Man himself, Colin Beavan will be joining us!

This month, the theme for the No Impact Projects Give Back Days will be Transportation! On November 18th, we are organizing “Walk/Ride day”, a city-wide day of action to promote the use of sustainable and healthy transportation. While there are many necessary ways to tackle the climate problem, we believe that each of us being engaged in action is part of the solution.

Starting November 15, participants will sign up atwww.gogreenstreets.org and commit to riding a bike, walking, taking a bus, a subway or carpooling on that day. Throughout the day, local businesses who sponsor the event will provide discounts for participants. This will be followed by a Meet-up at Luca Bar to celebrate living more sustainably. In other words, reduce your carbon emissions, get a rush of endorphins, meet other inspired people, and save money! We also encourage all participants who are able to attend the Transportation Conference on Nov. 18th
hosted by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer (http://bit.ly/vGlnw0).

This event not only can encourage us to look at our own consumption and transportation choices, but can raise awareness for others in our communities. It also urges local businesses to be socially responsible while gaining new customers. Organize your friends and co-workers and see the ways in which sustainable choices increase personal health, environmental health and community connection.

The No Impact Project is an international, environmental, nonprofit project, founded in the spring of 2009. It was inspired by the No Impact Man book, film, and blog.

The Green Streets Initiative is an international grassroots organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA that celebrates and promotes the use of sustainable, active transportation.

little skips is proud to announce the creation of Skips Records, a label serving the creative community that has grown around the café art space. The label will primarily feature local artists from Bushwick in an effort to help emerging talent who might otherwise not have opportunities to diffuse their creative content.

The first release from Skips Records will be Photon Dynamo and the Shiny Pieces’ third album. Comprised of Frank Rathbone on guitar and vocals, John Swanson on drums and Gillian Visco on bass, Dynamo plays a style of rock’n’roll with influences from everywhere from surf rock to jazz to blues to indie. Among their many influences are Elliot Smith, The Flaming Lips and Sonic Youth, and they’ve developed a cult following in Brooklyn with their hectic and loud live shows

The trio formed when Rathbone and Swanson crossed paths at the Opera House, and they later brought in Visco, whom Rathbone had known from different open mics all over the city. Soon they were performing at places like Market Hotel, Death by Audio, Public Assembly, The Ace Hotel, Party Xpo, little skips, Opera House Lofts and countless other venues. Quickly they perfected their sound and gained a strong peer following, performing alongside Darwin Deez, Soft Spot and Dinowalrus to name a few.

“At the Fort Brooklyn, 2011″ is not only the title of their album, but also the when and where it was recorded. So much of the energies heard in the album are real life feelings, moments and adventures that happen tangibly and intangibly around the artist and label’s home. The art for the album are two drawings by James Marshall who shows work at little skips regularly.

Featuring the works of Abel Macias, Joanna Trimble and Luke Jacunski

We are explorers pushing the frontier, finding the balance between happiness and sadness, safety and danger, and continually exploring the fine lines of beauty.

Abel Macias’ paintings and drawings are about whatever he may see in his day to day life. They touch on the anxieties he has about growing older while still remaining curious about life’s simplicities. They can be symbolic, but with an overcoat of whimsy. Most importantly, he is interested in making serious art seem childish. So color and play are important. He studied at Pratt Institute and Savannah College of Art and Design. He wanted to approach his art with an Illustrative point of view so he majored in Illustration. He lives and works in Brooklyn for last 8 years now with his dog Bazooka.

—

Joanna Trimble is a self-taught photographer/artist currently residing in Bushwick who is vividly exploring ideas and communication. She thrives on creativity, interaction and is an advocate of the free education that life provides.

Photography allows Joanna to express her passion to exist, the beauty she sees in life and the presence of the people, places and things that give life meaning. She challenges her own perceptions and interpretations so that the work will not only be reflective of a moment in time, but will sustain the conscious effort of the viewer to engage all of their senses in reliving the moment. Photography has always evoked unsolvable questions, pushing the artist to explore the mysteries that lie beyond. The artist wants to continuously traverse the planet gathering ideas and sharing information with others, leaving lasting impressions about the power of art and awareness.

—

Luke Jacunski believes life threatening situations often bring about feelings that tread the line between realism and the surreal. In dealing with his own personal “close calls”, he finds it therapeutic to explore elements & emotions associated with violence such as randomness, seduction, absurdity & humor. Personal experiences have influenced and shaped Luke’s work, but the pieces themselves are kept abstract so that each member of the audience can question and/or connect to the work in an individual way.

Calling out to all our artist coffee drinkers, we are going to host a show at little skips for Bushwick Open Studios and we would love it if you participated. To be considered for the show, send an email to fun (at) littleskips (dot) com with information about yourself and a link to where pictures of your work can be seen.

If you are interested in hosting your own show or are already planning on doing so, we can also help spread the word or make sure you are registered correctly. Together we can draw even more attention to the incredible creativity and artistry in our neighborhood.
